In 1981, Rick and Judy Meer moved to Roswell from Cedarburg Wisconsin with 3 young sons. Rick, being a second generation electrician, found a job with an electrical contracting company in Atlanta and Judy got the boys settled into their new school, joined a tennis team and Roswell Junior Woman’s Club. In 1984, Rick and Judy decided they would start their own business, starting the business working out of their home so that Judy could continue to supervise the lives of their growing family. After a few years of doing new commercial construction projects, they decided that helping homeowners and businesses with their electrical needs was more to their liking. Peter, the oldest son, learned the business working during the summer while attending Southern Polytechnical College to learn the basics of electricity. Peter is now Vice President of Operations and a huge asset to the business. Meer Electric offers electrical services including repairs, maintenance, and installation of everything from outlets, switches, light fixtures and ceiling fans to generator installation, phone, cable and computer installations, outdoor lighting design, installation, and repair. They also have the equipment and capability of performing underground directional boring which allows them to install wiring in all types of applications requiring underground lines without digging up lawns, driveways, parking lots or roads.
As the family owned and operated business grew and the “Meer Electric Man” was seen on trucks all over town, the family became a lot more involved in the community. Rick joined and has been very active in the Roswell Rotary Club since 1992. Judy has served as an officer in the Canton Street Merchants Association and the Roswell Junior Woman’s Club, President of the Roswell Historical Society, a member of the Roswell Historic Preservation Commission and a member of the Board of The Friends of Barrington Hall.
Peter retired as a Captain of the Roswell Fire Department in 2013 after 21 years as a firefighter and an EMT. Peter’s wife, Kelly, as a member of the Roswell Junior’s Woman’s Club, created the Safety Town Program with the Roswell Recreation and Parks Department in 2004. The Program has taught over 12,000 children, 4 to 6 years old, the dangers of walking or riding on streets and sidewalks, being approached by strangers and how policemen and firefighters are there to help them by spending part of their session time with uniformed personnel from both departments. Kelly and daughters Cierra and Anna Marie are currently participating in the National Charity League Organization since 2013.
Meer Electric has been a part of the Habitat for Humanity Program and the Homes for our Troops. They have also been sponsors of the Roswell North Elementary Foundation, Roswell High School sports groups, the Chattahoochee Nature Center, North Fulton Charities and Friends of Bulloch Hall among others. “We have enjoyed and appreciated the opportunities we have had being a part of this wonderful community in Roswell, especially in being able to contribute to the local schools where our children and now grandchildren have attended. We consider our customers our friends and when we have the opportunity to help in whatever way we can, it gives us that sense of belonging that makes it all worthwhile”, says Judy Meer.
